A while back, I answered a prompt asking about 30 things that make me happy So the easy answer would be to refer to one of the things on that list. Honestly, I would probably say that the things that make me happiest are being with my kids. Going to baseball games and going to the beach are also near the top of the list, but they don’t mean as much without the kids in tow.
Being with both of my boys just makes me feel like a 100% dad. I’ve been thinking about this one a lot as the holidays are coming up. Kid 1 is 16 and he’s eventually going to have his own stuff going on. Hell, in way he already does. Kid 2 is only 8. The problem with Kid 2 is that a lot of that “Christmas Magic” is going to fade as he gets older. Also, to be honest, I spend more time with Kid 2 than I do Kid 1 just because of proximity.
I suppose a consolation for me with the boys not being with me full-time is that I won’t experience the “empty nest syndrome” that most parents go through when their kids grow up and move out. Still, I’ve got a couple years of “Christmas magic” left with Kid 2, so i plan on making these next few count.
I didn’t plan on this turning into a holiday rant, but that’s how it goes.
