Share what you know about the year you were born.
Right off the bat, I will tell you that I had to look some of the stuff up, because I was a baby in 1974. All I knew how to do back then was cry, poop and pee. Here are some of the things that were happening in the world the year that Your Favorite Blogger was born:
Perhaps, first and foremost, as an American, 1974 is remember for the culmination of the Watergate scandal. The scandal began with President Nixon, placing illegal wire taps on the phone lines of the Democratic National Committee, during his run up to reelection as President. Nixon was afraid that everyone was out to get him, he wanted to get as much dirt on those whom he considered his adversaries as he could.
Well, they got him alright. Facing the very real possibility of being impeached and convicted by both houses of Congress, President Nixon shows to resign. He is, to this day, the only US president to do so.

Now on to some useless information:
- Number 1 song in America the week I was born: “Bennie & the Jets” by Elton John
- Number one song in America for 1974: “The Way We Were” by Barbra Streisand
- Number one rated television show for the 19 74-75 season: All in the Family
1974 would also see the end of the television shows Beat the Clock and The Brady Bunch
- Number one movie in America for 1974 (and the week I was born): Blazing Saddles
- Oscar Winner for Best Picture for 1974: The Sting
Incidentally, 1974 also saw the release of The Godfather, part II. It would go on to win the Academy award for best picture in 1975.
In the world of sports:
- The Oakland Athletics win the 1974 World Series. It is their third consecutive World Series win.
- The Miami Dolphins win Super Bowl VIII
- The Boston Celtics win the 1974 NBA finals
- The Philadelphia Flyers win the 1974 Stanley Cup
- West Germany hosts and wins the 1974 World Cup
Muhammad Ali defeats George Foreman, regaining the world heavyweight championship of which he was stripped seven years prior. The match takes place in Zaire and is billed as “the rumble in the jungle“
I’m sure there’s so much more that happened in 1974 that I’m missing out on. This is just some of the stuff I found doing a quick Google search.
Do you know if you remember going back into the Hallmark stores in the 80s, and they would have those kiosks that would write up a newsletter about the year you were born? Remember thinking how old i thought parents and grandparents were whenever we got one of those made. I’m probably younger now than my parents were when we did those things.
Looking at some of the stuff that was big in 1974, makes me feel… Old.
- What do you know about the year that you were born?
- Does this prompt make you feel as old as it makes me feel?
