Creativity Begets More Creativity

Daily writing prompt
How are you creative?

Merry Christmas, everybody!

I’m pretty sure that I’ve answered this question, or some variation on this question on previous prompts, but we’ll do it again:

Right now, the most creative endeavor I have taken on is this very blog. As I mentioned elsewhere, about four months ago, I decided to commit to this blog, and I’ve been posting pretty much every day ever since. Writing is like any other creative endeavor; you have to practice it. I’d like to think that my writing has been improving over these last few months.

I’m hopeful that this blog will be a gateway to more creative endeavors for me

I also find that the more I write, the more introspective I get. The more I start thinking about things on a deeper level: my life experiences, my life in general, my thoughts, my fears, my future.

But even though the blog is really been the only creative endeavor I’ve taken on recently, it is making me want to explore other avenues. I haven’t done so yet, but I’m getting ready to pick up the bass guitar that I haven’t touched it nearly 5 years. I was never very good at it, I only learned how to play a few chords. But it was an opportunity for me to just… Make something, namely, music, or at least a vague facsimile of music

I’ve always had a bit of admiration for musicians. It’s one thing to sing, it’s one thing to play a musical instrument. It’s a whole different thing to take multiple music, instruments, and vocals, and combine them into a song. And the writing/creating/composing of original music is just another level of creativity.

I wish I looked this cool playing my bass…

I’m a firm believer in the idea that creativity begets more creativity. Musicians become songwriters. Sketch artists may try their hand at painting or sculpting. I’m hoping that this would-be writer decides to pursue music, even casually.

Here’s a stupid little fantasy scenario I’ve had cooking for a while: The first song I ever learned how to play on the base was “ Blitzkrieg Bop” by the Ramones. I’ve always wanted to learn the parts to lead guitar, drums, and the vocals. Record those, along with also playing bass – into a four track recorder and just create a recording of myself playing that song; like Dave Grohl recorded the first Foo Fighters album by himself. No, I’m not living under the delusion that I could ever become a musician. I just want to create something I’ve never done before.

How are you creative?

I agree with you that creativity begets more creativity, as art influences art. I, too, am an amateur musician. When the well seems to be coming up dry on my writing, it’s what I most often turn to. I also agree that writing tends to make me more introspective. It’s like writing, a solitary activity, is a conversation with myself that I share with whoever wants to read it. But, the more accustomed I’ve grown to writing the words, the easier they seem to come. Good luck on all of your creative endeavors.

“A conversation with myself “I love that!

There’s a great quote from Ralph Waldo Emerson, that I actually use a lot, especially in teaching/ “I am not solitary, whilst I read and write, though nobody is with me“

Happy holidays, and good luck to you in all of your creative endeavors as well!
