Temperature Check: Eve or Day?

Merry Christmas. And if you don’t celebrate the holiday, Happy Monday.

Christmas Eve and Christmas Day: two holidays, but not really. People treat them as such but technically, one is a holiday; the other is the day before.

Here in America, December 24 is not a legal holiday; only the 25th is. But most businesses, and retail in particular, close early on the 24th. They realize that most people are either celebrating on the 24th, preparing for the 25th, or both.

Growing up in my family, Mother’s side of the family always got together on Christmas Eve. The Old Man’s side always got celebrated Christmas Day. Of course, the morning of Christmas was always reserved for the kids. This was a pretty ideal situation growing up because there was never any conflict as to who was spending which day with whom. Early in my relationships with both X1 and X2, we were faced with the question of which day we were going to celebrated with which side of the family. Events like those on the 2008 movie, Four Christmases are not very realistic. Lines have to be drawn and decisions have to be made.

Obviously, not everyone celebrates Christmas. December 25 has become a big release day for movies. The truth is, once the gifts are doled out, the fruitcake is sliced, and the families depart, Christmas night is usually anticlimactic. To my surprise, I noticed that my blog gotten more traffic today (as on noon) than I did all day yesterday (the 24th)

So my question is what day do you or your family place a greater emphasis on? Christmas Eve? or Christmas Day? I would love to hear your opinion.
