The Mackinac Island Virgin

Name an attraction or town close to home that you still haven’t got around to visiting.

I think when you live in a place for an extended period of time, you tend to take the local attractions for granted.  I know that’s how it was for me; until I moved to South Carolina many moons ago. A few days before leaving Michigan, I remember thinking to myself: I haven’t been to Sleeping Bear Dunes. I have been to Mackinac Island! I haven’t been anywhere in this dumb state! In spite of being back in Michigan for almost 12 years, I have still never made it to Mackinac Island.

Mackinac Island is covered up by the “Mackinac City” caption on this Google map.

Mackinac Island is one of those places that Michiganders just assume you’ll eventually visit. The bulk of the Island consists of Mackinac Island State Park, featuring a lot of picturesque natural beauty. In addition, the buildings on this island have been historically preserved and renovated; thus earning the island a National Historical Landmark status. One of the most interesting rules of the island is that motor vehicles (with the exception of emergency and city service vehicles) are banned. You get around on the island on foot or by bike. It should come as no surprise that the 1980 movie, Somewhere in Time, a movie about time travel, was filmed at the island’s famed Grand Hotel.

There was a particularly bleak video posted by Popular Science, then picked by the local website M Live about Mackinac Island having the nicest climate in the country by 2100, due to climate change.

I know I’m not doing the island justice by me description here. Do yourself a favor and google it. Better yet, make a trip there yourself. If you like nature and the idea of “a simpler time” you won’t be disappointed; or so they tell me.

This is a beautiful place and we visited last summer all the way from Pennsylvania and my blog with pictures was a hit 😊.

I think being a local, it’s just something I take for granted.

The 1980 Christopher Reeve movie “somewhere in time” was filmed there. It makes sense considering most of the island is a living time capsule.
