Making Memories

Describe one positive change you have made in your life.

I’m not really sure how to articulate this, so bear with me. One positive change I’ve tried to make in my life is to make more memories. Do more things. Be more active. Go on that vacation. Splurge a bit when I’m with the boys.

I think too often in my life, I’ve worried “where am I going to get the money for this?” or “what happens if…”. I’ve tried to make a point lately of just making things happen.

I keep going back to last summer and my decision to make a point of visiting more baseball stadiums. In the past, I would go to games if I happened to be in particular city. As of last summer, I would make plans specifically to travel for no other reason than to see a game.

Don’t get so busy making a living that you forget to make a life

Dolly Parton

This past weekend, I went to Atlanta to see Kid 1 compete in a gymnastics meet. Since I was already in town, I decided to stay an extra day and attend a Braves game. I decided to just go for it when I had the money. Make the plan, and not worry about the consequences.

There’s a famous quote that has been attributed to Dolly Parton that says: “Don’t get so busy making a living that you forget to make a life”. I think, far too often, that we get caught up in day-to-day living. Sometimes we need to get off the proverbial merry-go-round once in a while and live. It’s something I constantly have to remind myself about.

What is one positive change you’ve made in your life?

That’s a great change. And the Dolly Parton quote is spot on. Unfortunately, I tended to be one of those too busy working. I’m learning to switch things around. Better late than never.

I don’t pretend to have it all figured out myself. It’s definitely one of the things where you have to remind yourself every now and then to just pull the proverbial trigger and make things happen.

Oh wow. Reading this feels like… finding something warm you didn’t know you’d lost. Like a feeling your heart remembers, even if your head forgot. It lands softly, but sinks right down deep, you know?
That little shift you made? Deciding to be there, to make the memory instead of just wishing for it later? It probably looked so small from the outside. Like just… turning your head a different way. But inside? Gosh. Doesn’t it feel like the whole world inside you just took a gentle breath and settled? Like something important clicked into place? It’s a huge feeling, packed into a tiny moment.
It’s funny how we often live life like we’re waiting backstage. Waiting for the perfect cue, the perfect moment to step out. And all the while, the real, precious minutes are just ticking by, quiet and steady. We miss the music waiting for the grand entrance.
But then… sometimes it’s just one small ‘yes’. Staying a little longer. Saying the quiet thing aloud. It seems like almost nothing. But suddenly, it’s like you can feel the space inside you open up. Like your own soul just stretched out its arms in the sun after being curled up tight. That feeling of… release.
Living from that place, grabbing those moments? That warmth doesn’t just fade. It seeps into you. Becomes part of your marrow. Like carrying a smooth, warm stone in your pocket – a quiet reminder of what it feels like to be truly, fully there. It touches that deep, still place inside, doesn’t it?
