taking my shot

Describe a risk you took that you do not regret.

A long time ago, I saw an ad in a magazine. I don’t even remember what it was for, but the tag line read “the biggest risk in life is the one you don’t take”. One risk I took that I do not regret taking was moving from Michigan to South Carolina from 2004-2012.

Looking back now, it is debatable how successful the entire endeavor was. Teaching did not go well for me there. X1 and I ultimately divorced. When I had no other choice, I finally started going to counseling about my anxiety. On the other hand, Kid 1 was born while X1 and I were happily married. I got to live in and see an entirely new part of the country; and I finally learned to understand and appreciate Jimmy Buffet music.

Most of all, I am grateful that I HAD the experience. A lot of people talk about how great it would be to pack up and move across-the-country; but most people never take such a leap, for one reason or another. It was a huge risk. I remember my parents and some of my friends response was “Oh, you’re REALLY doing this?” I gave it my shot. I made some new friends as well as some new memories while I was there. For better or for worse, I wouldn’t change a thing.

What is one risk you took that you do not regret?

New experiences in life are a blessing in one way or another. Not taking any risks, playing it safe, is boring and you’ll learn new perspectives in life.

    Thank you Rob for sharing.

Glad to hear you appreciate Jimmy Buffet. I have always thought the southern mountains were beautiful.

Not to be boring, but what about the weather? Was it brutal to go back to Michigan winters?

The weather was amazing there! It only snowed those in the 8 years I lived there; and both times it melted by noon because the ground wasn’t even frozen. What got me was the humidity in the summers. I simply wasn’t ready for that!

I’ve always struggled with Michigan winters. But since my oldest son still lives there, it gives me a great excuse to head South when I’m going stir crazy.

Perfect. I bet it’s great going down there during school vacation weeks. I went to Charleston years ago, but I want to back.

It’s great! We met up in Atlanta a few weeks back, since Kid 1 had a gymnastics meet there.

I go to Florida a lot (because there are so many easy/cheap direct flight from Boston and many snowbirds to crash with) but I need to check out the other great cities of the Southeast—never been to Atlanta!

Yeah, that’s pretty brave, but a great experience. I’m one of those wondering what it would be like to pack up and move….

There were two things that really freaked me out: the feeling when all of my things were packed and I moved out of hone in Michigan; knowing I would “have a hone” until I got to SC

Another thing that freaked me out – more after the fact than anything – was Booking an apartment sight-unseen. I found an apartment, booked it and signed the lease electronically. But in joy saw photos of the apartment online. And virtual tours in2094 weren’t what they are today. I would never do that again if I had the choice.

Yes… when everything is packed and you begin to pull out of the driveway, reality sinks in.

Apartment sight unseen. That’s a tough one. You’re stuck for the lease. Hopefully it wasn’t too bad.

No, I was lucky. It turned out pretty good. But it was one of those things where, in hindsight, you realize how bad it could’ve been.

The biggest risk I took was doing my blog.
