Kid 1 flew into town Thursday night. X1 and I made arrangements for him to tour the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, so we did that yesterday
I envy him in a way. I wrote a bit about this when Kid 2 and I met up with him to tour the. university of Illinois last month. In many ways, I feel a sense of things coming full circle. After all, X1 and I met on a college tour.
I have previously lived in or around the Ann Arbor area for a combined total of 8 years. part of that was while I was in college and part was more recently. I love the college experience and I love the energy of a university campus. You can just FEEL things happening there. You see people working on things , dreaming of new – even revolutionary – ideas that are going to shape our world in the near future.
I could’ve taken 1000 photos there yesterday. We’ve all seen those pictures in college brochures, and college advertisements: the ones where students are sitting outside studying, working in a lab, in a classroom, just doing college things. I could see that everywhere yesterday.
I suppose a lot of this goes back to the fact that I am a teacher. I love the idea of just learning, thoughts, dreams, ingenuity and creativity all coalescing in one place; both for those who can afford it and those for whom it is a necessity in their career path, College is a magnificent experience. I’ve said elsewhere that “anyone who tells you that high school is the best time of your life has never actually been to college. There is never another time in life where you have so much freedom and responsibilities.”
I don’t know if Kid 1 will be accepted into Michigan, but I must admit I would love it if he decided to come to school here. It would out him about 90 minutes away from me. It’s not a bad drive if there was something that he needed. Plus it would make it a lot easier for me to see him in general.
Kid 1 will be in town all weekend. The fact that it’s also my regularly scheduled weekend with kid 2 just makes me all-the-happier. The band is back together.
