happy new year! Let’s see what 2025 brings us
it seems like every year the world is getting more and more complicated. Sometimes I thought it was just because of my age. But I’m starting to realize it’s just the way the world is now. Social media, instantaneous digital communication, and a 500 channel universe have just led to an onslaught of images, messages and vitreal.
Being a history student as I am, I often look back at the past and compare it to the present. I don’t honestly know if the world is any award divided or more “on the brain” than it has ever been. Hell, there have been wars that have ravaged this Planet, lasting for years! I think the problem today in the 21st-century is that we just hear more about it. We hear more of the vitriol. We hear more of the hatred. We see more images of what people should or should not be at our crush when we don’t live up to them.
Wow, I didn’t really plan on going on a ranch like that this morning. But there it is.
But to bring things back to the prompt, I think I have a lot of the same challenges today that I had in 2024. Though I must admit the prospect of another four years of Donald Trump as president scares the hell out of me.
I know that I, as a white heterosexual male who is born into this country by American citizens, will be “OK“. But it’s not me that I worry about. It’s women, it’s immigrants, it’s LGBTQ community, it’s “the other“ that I fear for. Just because I’m not being treated on justly does not mean that I can’t recognize opposed injustice being inflicted upon others. As Martin Luther King once said “injustice anywhere as a threat against justice everywhere”
I know, I’m talking about big world altering things here, when the prompt is really just asking me what is the biggest challenge I face. For me, I want to treat 2025 basically as an extension of 2024. As I mentioned a few other posts, I feel like I made a lot of progress in a lot of areas of my life this past year. And I’d like to continue my forward movement. 
A rant on the state of College football 
Today is New Year’s Day and well I naturally don’t party the way I used to as I get older, I’m also finding that I couldn’t care less about this year‘s college football schedule. Most years, even if Michigan isn’t playing in the Rose Bowl, or one of the playoff games, I make a point to at least tune in to keep my “finger on the pulse“ as soon as speak. But there’s been a lot of changes to college football recently, the game is expanded to a 12 team tournament for the national championship. Players have begun being paid under the “name, image, and likeness“ plan. This is also led to more and more student athletes that transfer portal than ever before. College football has, in a sense become a semi pro football league. As an educator, I find that really discouraging.
I don’t think the game of college football was really ever all that pure. At least certainly not by the time television entered into the fray. There’s big bucks to be made from college football, and everybody wants to get a piece of the proverbial pie. It seems. Including the players now. and even if one is able to look past the monetization of the NCAA, it’s hard to ignore the changing landscape of the game; as teams are leaving one athletic conference for another faster than ever before. The Pac 12 is virtually nonexistent now, as they only played as a two team conference this year. A lot of the traditional rivalries that people have enjoyed in the game for decades are no more. I think that longtime college football fans would probably have a very hard time recognizing the game today. Sure, the team names and colors are all there, as are the names of the ball games, but it’s just so much different now.
