The Fifth Wall

A conceptual split image featuring a man on the left in a casual jacket holding a smartphone with a stylized "RR" logo. A starburst pattern of shattered glass splits the scene. The shattered glass shards reveal a blurred, smiling woman holding a microphone, floating social media icons, code, and blog text titled "Rebuilding Rob - Day 1,123". The title "THE FIFTH WALL" is written across the center fracture. On the bottom right, a robotic cybernetic hand with exposed inner tissue reaches toward the fracture.

In theater and film, the “Fourth Wall” is that invisible barrier separating the characters on stage from the audience sitting in the dark. Breaking it is almost always an intentional, calculated move. Ferris Bueller turns to the camera to explain the absurdity of high school. Zack Morris calls a “Time Out” to speak directly to the viewer.

And if you want to get a little academic about it, Shakespeare’s Iago is arguably the smartest character – not just in Othello but in every Shakespeare play – simply because he understands the power of the Fourth Wall better than anyone else. He constantly steps out of the action, breaks the plane, and pulls the audience into his confidence. He makes the viewer a silent accomplice to his inner processing while everyone else on stage remains completely oblivious.

For the last three and a half years—and over 1,100 consecutive days of writing—I’ve had my own version of that soliloquy. This blog and my companion podcast were my private stage. I stepped out of my everyday life, turned to the digital ether, and spoke my rawest, most unfiltered thoughts.

Everyone in my world had an alias. The ex-wife, the ex-fiancée, my kids, my closest friends, and eventually, the new woman in my life. The only real name ever typed into these pages or spoken into a microphone was my own. For a long time, I was hyper-vigilant about hiding even basic geographical details. My writing was a fortress, and anonymity was my moat.

But there’s another boundary that writers rarely talk about: The Fifth Wall.

If the Fourth Wall separates the artist from the audience, the Fifth Wall is the fragile, invisible line separating the writer’s therapeutic digital archive from their real, breathing relationships. Breaking the Fourth Wall is an artistic choice you control. But on Monday afternoon, my Fifth Wall didn’t just break—it completely collapsed.

It wasn’t a calculated reveal. It was a text message from Sierra asking, with complete affection, when I was ever going to tell her about my “amazing podcast on TikTok.”

She had seen a thumbnail pop up on her feed—an image of my van from my traffic accident last month. She clicked on it, heard my voice, and the lightbulb went off.

In an instant, my brain hit full Threat Level Midnight.

When you’re just some random dude shouting into cyberspace, you can pretend nobody is really listening. But when the person you love most in the world suddenly buys a front-row ticket to the raw architecture of your mind, your nervous system takes a hit. When we talked on the phone shortly after, I had what she playfully dubbed “a little bit of a meltdown.” I was crying on the phone because the sheer weight of a double life—of keeping my writing and my reality in separate compartments—finally came crashing down.

Yet, right after dropping that discovery on me, one of the very first things she said was, “I love you.” She didn’t say it once; she said it multiple times.

She didn’t react with judgment, horror, or a desire to weaponize or control my story. She met the reveal with grace. She told me how much she admired the openness, the vulnerability, and the willingness to put my heart out there for the world. Hearing my thoughts on a deeper level didn’t push her away; it brought her closer.

Which brings me to the Lois Lane dilemma.

Once Lois finds out Clark Kent is Superman, the dynamic inevitably shifts. Every time I step away to write or record, she knows where I’m going. But does knowing about the blog mean our private life becomes content for public consumption?

An absolute, non-negotiable no.

“Anything you say can and will be used against you” belongs in a courtroom, not a healthy relationship. Moving forward, the goal isn’t to start censoring my internal growth—it’s to honor the sacred distinction between my personal evolution and our private sanctuary. My writing is where I process my mind, my history, and my flaws. But the quiet moments, the private jokes, and the intimate spaces between us don’t belong to the internet. They belong to us.

I’d be lying if I said I have this all figured out. There’s no magical elixir or one-off blog post that instantly solves the emotional whiplash of the last 24 hours. I’m still coming to terms with what it feels like to have the armor off.

The Fifth Wall is down, and I’m leaving it down. I spent years living in compartments, terrified of being fully seen. But on a random Monday night, the universe picked the lock, and the woman standing on the other side looked at all of it and loved me more.

I guess that officially brings my podcast listener count up to four. And if there’s anyone on this planet who deserves to know this side of me, it’s her.

The fist sits in the center of a wide dark asphalt highway lined with icy blue glacier walls on either side under a glowing orange and blue sunrise horizon.

P.S. Tune in tomorrow for the new episode of the podcast. And stick around through the credits… because in true Marvel fashion, there just might be a post-credits teaser about where we go from here now that the wall is down.
