The past, the future and the hard questions at the end

A year ago, I wrote this very topic. At the time, I said that I probably spend more time looking at the past than I do to the future. I also wine on to explain that we plan for the future, but we look back to the past.

If you were to ask me, today, in 2025, at this moment, I’d say I’m probably looking more to the future than I am to the past.

Here’s last years more light-hearted and philosophical answer to today’s prompt

Mother’s health is declining quickly. Yesterday, Guillaume, Phred and I got together at the hospital to start making some of the big health care decisions. More specifically, we weee discussing how far we wanted the hospitals, or any first responders – to go if/ when she’s dying. Do we want them to intubate her? Given her other health issues, do we want them to resuscitate her?

Officially Phred has power of attorney regarding Mother’s medical decisions. But she has never been that sibling who would say “it’s my decision. I have POA”. At the same time, neither Guillaume nor I would ever place the burden of making those decisions exclusively on her.We were having these same discussions about The Old Man exactly 10 years ago at this time. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, nothing in this world makes up an adult more than putting your parents in the ground and inheriting the world from the older generation.

With this kind of decision-making taking place, I guess I’m not thinking so much about the future -or the past – lately as I much as I’m thinking about the end. As I’ve blogged about before, any time that anybody I know passes away, I inevitably start thinking about my own mortality. I think that’s only natural though. But I know that that this kind of thinking is only temporary. For most people, this kind of thinking leads to them thinking more about their own future. I do need to start thinking about what I want to leave behind for Kid 1 and Kid 2.

I didn’t really plan on getting this deep today, but no one ever wants to actually have to think about these kinds of questions either.
