Rob and The Fellowship of the Ring.

As WordPress continues to recycle old prompts, I pulled another prompt from The Coffee Monsterz Co to respond to today

Think of a movie, TV show, or book that you consume over and over again. What do you like about it?

I’m very much a creature of habit, so I could probably answer this prompt with several different titles.

But this morning, I will go with something. I was just watching earlier today, the Lord of the Rings movies; specifically the Fellowship of the Ring.

I remember when Fellowship…. was released a little over 23 years ago. My God, has it been that long? As a nerd, I knew how big Lord of the rings was. As a movie geek, I had already heard that the Lord of the Rings live action movie adaptation would actually be three films with a movie released in 2001, 2002 and 2003 respectively.

The first time I sat down to watch Fellowship, I knew the movie was three hours long and I knew that it was only the first part of a trilogy. In spite of all of that, and about the three hour mark, I remember getting up out of my chair and saying “no! I’m like this!” This movie truly had my interest for the duration.

But more than that, Fellowship…was the first time since the original Star Wars that I had watched a movie and truly believed that I was seeing something that took place in another world. I’m sure a lot of that had to do with the fact that. They’re probably haven’t been a bunch of movies shot in New Zealand that I’ve made their way to the states. But most of all, it was the strict attention to detail that director, Peter Jackson, and the entire casting crew of the movie adhered to.

I’ve seen a lot of of the behind-the-scenes/making of specials about the Lord of the rings trilogy, and it’s obvious that Peter Jackson was absolutely passionate about the story. Not only that, he was hell bent at making this agree to an adaptation possible.

Fellowship… is one of the handful of movies that I call my “drop everything and watch” movies. I’m still at the generation that came along before streaming, so for me, when a movie or TV shows on regular TV, it is still something of an event. If I’m home, and I see Fellowship… on TV, I’ll stop whatever I’m doing and watch it.

Don’t get me wrong. The two towers and the return of the king, were also incredible film films in their own right. Towers gave viewers perhaps our very first experience with an entirely computer generated character in golem. What Gollum did for CGI alone, …Towers was revolutionary.

Then, of course, Return of the King was the third act in the trilogy that had to tie up all of the proverbial loose ends of the story. And although Fellowship… and…Towers won a few technical Academy awards, it was …King that earned 11 Oscars, including best Director and best picture.

I remember when Fellowship came out, Burger King was selling these Gandalf goblets that had a light, a battery and a button in the bottom. When you picked up the goblet, it glowed red. Aside: Amazon offers the extended version of each… about an extra hour of additional content in each one. Well worth it 😎
