A World Without Sleep

As WordPress continues to recycle old prompts, I pulled another prompt from The Coffee Monsterz Co to respond to today

If you could choose not to sleep without any consequences of sleep deprivation, would you stay awake forever?

I’ve written in this topic before, but yes I think if I could choose not to ever sleep, I probably my would. Don’t get me wrong, I love sleeping, but I would love to have almost 1/3 of my day time to do things I want or need to do.

Of course, even if we eliminated sleep, we would still need beds for things like sex. What kind of effects would the elimination of sleep even have in the entire sex ritual? Think about how much of the actual sex act is related, or connected to sleep. No more post-coital nap. No more sexy before bed, or first thing in the morning. People would just have sex.

Without sleep, we would also have no dreaming. According to the prompts, there would be no consequences to eliminating sleep. The problem is, I would miss all of the weird, abstract dreams that we humans have when our brain is actually trying to process information that we’ve choir throughout a day. And why are those weird dreams where I’m still in high school. No more of those weird dreams where I go to work and I’m not wearing pants. No more of those weird dreams where I’m in a relationship with an ex-girlfriend or friends and loved ones are still alive. I’m not even talking about the negative consequences of not dreaming. I’m just talking about the idea of losing that particular part of our lives.

As a school teacher, I would love it if humans didn’t sleep anymore. I’m trying to imagine a world where NONE of my students EVER fall asleep in class. I’m trying to imagine just how much more productive my classes would be – just that one aspect of my life alone!

One thing I would hope to disappear if sleep or eliminated would be the typical 9–5 workday. I would love to see people take on more of a 24 hour approach to living and working. Some people could work days. Others could work afternoons just like they already do. Other people could choose to work overnight.

Going back to what I said about school earlier. I think that the end of the traditional 9–5 or they would also see the hours in which students go to school change. I heard once somewhere, and I can’t confirm it, but I remember reading that in order for students to really be working at their maximum brain potential for the day, school should begin at 2 PM. Obviously, with the 9–5 work day, that is not realistic.

Of course this is all just pipe dreaming. But it’s nice to imagine.
