Big game boredom

Today is Super Bowl Sunday. It is something of an unofficial holiday here in the United States. The Super Bowl is, of course, the NFL championship game and the last American football game of the season.

The Super Bowl is the number one watched television event in the United States, year after year. I heard a report this year that some advertisers are paying as much as $8 million for a 32nd spot during the game today. Some of the most memorable television spots of the last 40 years have premiered during “the big game“. This year, I’m just hoping we get new ads for upcoming Superman and Fantastic Four: First Steps movies

For my money, the best Super Bowl commercial ever.

The Super Bowl halftime show, which is typically performed by Popular recording. Artists is the world‘s biggest free advertising spot. Musicians are not paid for their performances during the Super Bowl halftime show.

Then, of course, there is the Super Bowl parties. I’ve been to a few over the years. I may even hosted a couple myself. In fact, I’m getting together with a handful of friends tonight to watch the game. Every year, we hear stories in the news about how Americans spend millions and millions of dollars on alcohol, soft drinks, and snacks for their get-togethers.

The funny part is that for most people who take part in Super Bowl festivities, the game is almost an afterthought. I think for casual viewers, the fact that the NFL championship is being determined just goes over their heads. I don’t mean to sound like a sports gatekeeper saying things like that, but it is what it is. It’s not unlike the attitude of a lot of people who attend opening day festivities for the Detroit Tigers. People just want an excuse to party.

I have to be honest: I’ll watch the game today, but as far as who actually wins , what commercials we see and who performs during halftime, I couldn’t care less this year.

The time that the first half of the Super Bowl was the opening act for a Prince concert…

I’m sure this is part because my hometown Detroit Lions were unceremoniously booted out of the playoffs earlier than expected. As it stands, I’m trying to remember that the YMCA ended at only three weeks ago. It feels like Metro Detroit has forgotten about the teeth since that.

Football has never been my favorite sport. I mean, I like it well enough. I followed the game just enough to be able to carry on a conversation if a man get together or a sports bar but baseball has always been my favorite sport. For me, The end of the Super Bowl just means that we were one step closer to baseball season. And perhaps more than that, the end of football season means that we are one step closer to the end of winter.

If you believe in conspiracy theories…

If there is a light at the end of the Super Bowl tunnel this year, it’s this. The logo for next year‘s Super Bowl game has already been leaked. there’s a popular conspiracy theory that suggest that the NFL is rigged. Furthermore, according to this theory, you can predict who is going to be in the big game based on the colors used in the Super Bowl logo. I personally don’t believe that the Super Bowl is rude, but they do make a few good points here.

Anyway, if this theory holds up, it means that the Lions will be on the Super Bowl for next year… Stay tuned.

I don’t care that much other than I don’t want KC to win. But, I’m not that invested in it at the same time.
And before the conversation everywhere even starts, I’ll just say Mahomes never beat Brady when it mattered and leave it as that. 😄

Being on the other side of the pond, I don’t follow the superbowl.

In the Football – my team lost. And in the Rugby – my team lost.

    Disapointing all along really!!
