Here’s the part where my bracket really starts to fall apart…
I went 4-4 on day 3 of the tournament
- Auburn and Michigan both nearly assignment yesterday. They’re helping one half of my remaining south region still look good.
- On the flipside, 1/2 of my West region completely fell apart, I was still a little bit Cinderella crazy as I actually had Drake advancing to the sweet 16. However, I don’t think anybody saw #10 seed Kansas knocking off #2 seed St. John’s yesterday. I’m sure obviously someone somewhere out there had it.
- The lone game in the east region yesterday saw BYU beating Wisconsin. That three-point loss was a heartbreaker for Badger fans, and another bracket buster for me.
- Meanwhile, in a Midwest region, Houston and Purdue did things by the numbers, and both teams advanced to the week 16. In the only other game in the region, Tennessee beat Utah State. I actually had Utah State advancing to the Sweet 16, so this part of my bracket is completely broken
I was watching some social media posts yesterday, and I saw some sports writers talking about how this year’s NCAA tournament “sucks”. They made some good arguments for it. In a TikTok post, Jeff Perlman was making the case that NIL and the expanded transfer has created a dynamic where the smaller schools are essentially feeder schools for the bigger programs. The sounds not unlike the situation in MLB, with the bigger-market “have” teams and the small-market “have nots“.
Sadly, greed is taking over everything. And like some many other successful enterprises, March Madness will probably end up consuming itself. Sure it’ll take years, but I think we’re already seeing the beginning of it.
