It’s Good to be King

As WordPress continues to recycle old prompts, I pulled another prompt from The Coffee Monsterz Co to respond to today

What is your favorite social media platform?

For me, this is a real easy answer. An animal feels like kind of achieve, go to answer. But my favorite social media platform is Facebook.

With over 3 billion active monthly users, I think it’s safe to say that Facebook bas almost been elevated to the status of an appliance. To me, having Facebook is like having a stove or refrigerator or even a toaster. Something most of us have and probably use every day and more or more.

I think there’s a lot to be said about the age of Facebook users. For years, and my students have been telling me that “Facebook is for old people“. Typically my response is “yeah, but I’m old“ from what most of my students told me, they do most of their social media, posting, and correspondence, through Instagram.

But we have reached a point in time where Facebook is now older than my students. It has literally been around for their entire lives. they don’t know of a world without social media. well they may not use Facebook, they most certainly use Instagram and TikTok.

I have a love/hate relationship with Facebook.

    I don’t know that it’s actually solved any problems beyond making communication with one’s friends network a little easier, and there are still plenty of other options there.
    
    On the flip side, there’s Facebook / Meta’s datamining and selling of everything that’s done on Facebook. It amazes me that people doubt it too. A completely free platform that provides premium services, again FREE, yet makes enough money to make Zuckerburg one of the wealthiest people on the planet? He’s used it for ages to datamine and profile users and is using that data to shape his Metaverse VR platform. He who controls the input controls the output.
    
    Then there’s everyone from employers, insurers and health care providers all the way to crazy exes stalking people on Facebook, and the people who develop phychological issues over their lives not measuring up to the curated images in social media.
    
    Let’s not forget that social media is the go to method for bullying and spreading hate and misinformation as well.

    This is true. I know, especially with recent political events, the whole data mining thing has become a bigger issue than ever. As a teacher, I can certainly tell you that half of the fights we have in school start because of things that transpired on social media.
    
    I always laugh when I see people who copy and paste the status update: “I do not give Facebook for permission to use my photos…”. I don’t think most people realize that once you upload something to Facebook, they own it.
    
    Maybe I was being too generous when I said that it does as much good as it does harm

    The bigger discussion would focus around is the tool the problem or the users? I’d be inclined to blame the users more, but sites like Facebook and Amazon are curated down to the smallest detail to promote use and harmful behaviors.
    
    And yes, those TOS will bite people in the butt every time. One of the MMORPGs I used to play; City of Heroes even had on the game’s TOS that everything the players created in the game became the intellectual property of the developer studio.
