On, Wisconsin

This past Friday morning, kid 1 attended the “future badger orientation” at the University of Wisconsin. I made the trip out, along with kid 2, to accompany him and get a feel for the campus myself.

I have never been to Madison, Wisconsin. In fact, I may have only driven through the town once. but I felt it was important to see the campus as Kid is going to attend school there in the fall.

Of course, every road trip I’ve gone on lately has included a stop at at least one major league ballpark. This weekend, I attended was no exception. I was originally planning to hit two, but only made it to one. Here is my review for Wrigley Field.

There was a different feel for this particular college visit, I think for all of us. I didn’t take as many photos as I have taken on the other campus visits we have done. I don’t think Kid 1 took as many photos either. Part of it is because some of the architecture was a little bit less inspiring than let’s say, university of Michigan. But I think there’s more to it than that. I can only speak for myself, but I think we all got this perception that this is where a kid one will be attending college in the fall. The selection process is pretty much over. Of course, that they offered him more scholarship money than any other school has doesn’t hurt either.

It’s not that this visit wasn’t as exciting as other college visits we’ve done. But there was definitely different feel to this visit . I can only speak for myself, but I felt as if we knew that we were going to be back probably a few more times this summer; and knew that Kid 1 would be here in the fall. It wasn’t so much about selling the campus to kid 1. He was sold on the scholarship that he was offered!

I think that X1, kid 1 and the girlfriend were all tired. They looked road weary. Of course, they had been on the road all week and visited one of Kid 1’s cousins in another state on their way to Wisconsin. I’m sure that didn’t help matters.

I have to admit that I was a little disappointed. In the fact we didn’t attend the baseball game in Milwaukee. Both my boys know that that’s important to me. It was really looking forward to spending time with both of them. But since everybody was so tired after the tour, myself included, I chose to skip Milwaukee. I could’ve put my foot down on him, insisted on him. Or I could’ve even just grabbed a kid too and said “let’s go”. But I wanted to spend time with both my children.

Of course, when I decided not to go when we all came back to the hotel, kid one, his girlfriend both crashed for the better part of the evening. So kid 2 and I were left to go to the pool ourselves, which was fine. Kid 2 had fun. But I know that he also wanted to spend time with this older brother.

Veronica tells me that I should’ve made them both go to the game. I was trying to explain to her that this kid one is 18 and physically larger than I am, it’s not very realistic for me to “force” him to physically do something.

If this was just about any other weekend, I would’ve made it entirely about the college visit. But Thursday was also my birthday. Is it going to the baseball game or something that I wanted to do. But, as I said, he is 18 years old. He’s capable of making his own choices. And he has to deal with the consequences of those choices, just like any other adult.

OK, I held off on this as long as I could because I didn’t want to appear to be dissing the school or the great opportunity that the kid got, BUT… I gotta be me, sooooo… Weird Al has something to say:
