As WordPress continues to recycle old prompts, I pulled another prompt from The Coffee Monsterz Co to respond to today

Apparently, I’m even recycling these prompts. About six weeks ago, I gave a completely different answer to this prompt.

Is there a fandom that you simply do not understand?

As a self-professed sci-fi junkie, I think I have a pretty broad depth of understanding and compassion for fans of other TV shows and movies. I consider myself a Trekkie. I consider myself a lifelong Star Wars fan. And I know all the stereotypes that go along with being friends of either of those franchises. Of course, there are many “fandom” groups of which I’m not a part. I’m not a “Swiftie” but I choose to live and let them live. But one group of fandom that I simply cannot understand are fans of Doctor Who, or Whovians

As a Star Trek fan, I’ve always thought Dr. Who fans were something like sci-fi hipsters. The perception has always been that they seen themselves as better than other sci-fi fans. At least, that now it feel as an outsider looking in. Of course, I can say the same thing about a certain sect of people who are fans of anything British – music, TV, movies. Just a little bit of my own insecurity, but I do feel like fans of Benny Hill and Monty Python see themselves as being more high-brow than fans of American comedian.

I must admit that I’ve never watched a single episode of Dr. Who. From what I’ve heard however, I would probably like this show. I’ve always been a huge fan of time travel Throw aliens into the mix, and the show is probably right up my proverbial wheelhouse

I have tried to watch some of the older Dr. Who seasons. Unfortunately, as a fan watching today, in the 21st century, so one the earlier episodes look downright corny. Like Star Trek: TOS, early Dr. Who shows are decades old. Special effects were as “special” as they are in a product made in 2025. For me it’s mostly case I’m just trying to take off my “2025 goggles“ and watch the episodes for what they are; just as I do with Star Trek TOS.

One encouraging thing about Doctor Who has been in production again since the early 2000s there’s a slew of relatively new content that I can check out. In crafting post, I feel like I have talked myself into checking out Doctor Who.
