As WordPress continues to recycle old prompts, I pulled another prompt from The Coffee Monsterz Co to respond to today
Do you think everyone is beautiful?
When I think of this question, I can’t help but think of the immortal line uttered by Bill Clinton during the Monica Lewinsky hearings “I guess it depends on what your definition of ‘is’ is”. To answer a question like “is everyone beautiful?” really depends on what your definition of beauty is.
Only human
Humans naturally find good-looking people attractive. If for not other reason, than because visual appearance is the first trait most of us can assess. It doesn’t make us superficial or shallow. It just means that we’re not mind-readers.
The problem with judging solely on looks is that it’s not enough to go on eventually, we get to know a person based on their words, their thoughts and their actions. The good news for those of us who aren’t supermodels is that our character usually more than compensates for our less-than-perfect appearance.
Good looks aren’t enough
I would love to give some hippie-dippy answer to this like “yes, we’re all beautiful in the eyes of God“. But the fact of the matter is, there are people who are just straight up ugly. And I don’t mean unattractive either. I’ve known some people who are visually, strikingly attractive; and yet they had some of the ugliest souls I’ve ever seen. It’s true. There are people who look beautiful; but have horrible ugly personalities. We all know people like this. Hell, I’ve even dated one or two in my time.
We’ve all known a few people like this in our lives. It’s as if they think that because they’re so attractive l, they are able to get away with being horrible human beings. I’ve hear people say “beauty is in the eye of the beholder. But ugly goes right to the one”. The nice thing is that expression goes both ways.
The Double-whammy
Then there’s the people who are hit with the “double whammy” of being both ugly on the outside and the inside. People like this are forced to rely on the power they wield, or their wealth, to make themselves more attractive. And there are some people who are simply drawn to that power. So much so, that they are willing to overlook both physical appearance and personality because of it. The Orange Man comes to mind. He’s not an attractive man furthermore, even his most ardent supporters will tell you that he doesn’t have the world’s greatest personality either. People like him are forced to make their wealth, their status or their political power their end-all, be -all defining trait. Sorry, but it’s true., I’m not turning this into an anti-Orange rant, but he’s a great example. Besides, I’ll probably have enough to say about him tomorrow…
For most of us, good looks are not enough. They are A LOT, but they’re not everything. The problem for some people is that they cannot get past a person’s looks – good or bad.
So to answer the question, no. It everyone is beautiful. I think I most people are beautiful in one way or another; there are those who are ugly both inside and outside.
