As WordPress continues to recycle old prompts, I pulled another prompt from The Coffee Monsterz Co to respond to today
What is uncertain in your life right now?
Sunday night, title manager and I were talking and the subject of retirement came up. At the moment, I think I have a tiny amount of my paychecks going into my state retirement fund. My 403B is virtually nonexistent. To put it in another way, one thing that’s uncertain in my life right now is my retirement – what I’ll be doing when I’m simply too old to work anymore.
I jokingly tell people that right now my retirement plan is death. That may not be terribly far from the truth. I don’t feel like I’m anywhere near the age to be giving a lot of thought to retirement. But the fact of the matter is, at 51, I’m eligible to join the AARP. Retirement is out there, on the other side of the horizon. It’s looming. And I’m nowhere near ready for it.
For a while, I thought I would end up like the old man. He retired on the young side from his first career. He was lucky enough to have a second career fall into his lap. although I don’t really plan on pursuing a “second career” I figure that I’m probably gonna give my current career, bare minimum, another decade and a half.
But it’s frightening to think about getting old. Hell, I don’t even know what the world is gonna be like by the time I’m old enough to retire. The system may be one where me retiring isn’t even really feasible. I’m a very well work till the day I die.
