As WordPress continues to recycle old prompts, I pulled another prompt from The Coffee Monsterz Co to respond to today
What is something about adulthood you wish you were warned about?
It’s amazing the way that we, when we are children, perceive the life of an adult. As kids, all we can do is look at adults and think “they don’t have to go to school. They don’t have to do chores. They don’t have to do homework. They don’t have to be in bed by a certain time. They don’t have parents rules that they have to live by”. And while this is all very much true, when we are young, we do not know, and cannot conceptualize the responsibilities of being an adult.
And as my title says, adulting sucks.
The burden of being the provider
I posted here, a while, back about some of the things that really rattle me. The main one I listed was “adulting”. I don’t mind admitting that I hate paying bills. I hate being indebted to people. I hate having to provide. That’s not to say that I want to be a lazy turd and just live off of handouts from society. It’s an enormous burden at times; especially as a man– being the provider.
I’ve been thinking lately a lot about why it is that I seem so reluctant to jump into a permanent long lasting relationship. The truth is, I’m afraid of what “being a full adult” does to me. It’s not even for say “I’m afraid of being an adult“. I feel like being a patriarch and a family is usually soul-crushing.
Nobody knows what they’re doing
But that’s another thing that they don’t teach you. As a kid, you assume that adults know everything. You assume that they’ve accumulated so much experience that they have the answers to all of your everyday life questions.
The truth is, none of us really know what the hell we’re doing. We’re making it up as we go. We’re trying day by day to be better, or at least good people. The old cliché about “there is no instruction book“ really is true.
