Rebuilding the Body and getting some answers

I had an appointment to see an allergist today. I don’t know if I’ve talked about this much before on this blog but for the last three years, I’ve gotten this cough that started up around Halloween time and ended just before New Year’s.

I assume the cough is a result some of the pollen or just something in the air at that particular time of year. In fact, the only reason I would even notice it going away was when I was making trips back-and-forth with Kid1 in South Carolina. It’s like once I got out of town and got away from whatever was in the air locally, things cleared up.

This past July, when kid2 was with me one week, he was a not feeling well. After he went home the next week, I noticed myself not feeling so good, and the cough came back. I saw my regular doctor about it. She gave me the same prescription so she was given to me every time this has flared up. But this time she finally referred me to an allergist, who I saw today.

The only real test she did was a breathing test. They didn’t do any skin test, blood work or anything like that. I think the plan is to do that about one month from now. She did prescribe me a new inhaler that hopefully will be a little bit more medicinal instead of just providing emergency relief.

So far, my allergist just seems to think it’s an asthmatic cough; something that I just developed an adulthood. She talked a bit about the “asthma spectrum“ which was interesting because every time I hear the word asthma I think of kids who can’t run. The idea of an “asthmatic spectrum” does make sense. Not unlike the autism spectrum, there are variations in asthma.

After dealing with this for the last three winters, I’m just hoping to finally get some answers. Anything has to be better than what I’ve been doing. So while I’m going to find an immediate fix-all, I’m just glad it’s being taken seriously.

Because of the time on my appointment, I just ended up taking the entire day off of work. On my downtime today, I went back to the gym. I didn’t pace myself very well, as I ended up getting too tired to do all the machines that I wanted to do. However, I did do two “new to me“ machines today. I probably worked my legs harder than I have in a long time, so I’m expecting to wake up a little bit sore tomorrow.

Like the allergist, I’m trying some new things at the gym as well; new machines and I’m going to start doing some exercises with sunless at home when I can’t, or won’t go to the gym.

My biggest concern with my body is my gut. Doing the workouts I’ve been doing a few times each week has not been enough to make a dent on it. I can’t make the excuse of. “I didn’t have time to get to the gym today” “Kid 2 is her so I can’t work out”. This is something I care about doing and I have to put in the effort.

The truth is I eat like crap. I’m trying to cut down on my snacking and this last weekend, I got myself down to one soda per day. I’m the meantime, I’ve finally discovered a new vice: iced coffee
