As WordPress continues to recycle old prompts, I pulled another prompt from The Coffee Monsterz Co to respond to today
You are leaving your current city forever. What restaurant or store would you visit one last time?
I can speak to this from personal experience as moved from Michigan to South Carolina from 2004-2012.
The funny thing about living in a particular place is that you start to take the local attractions, or things that make it unique, for granted. A few days before I moved to South Carolina I started thinking about all of the things I had never done in Michigan.
Oh my God. I’ve never been to Mackinac Island! I’ve never been to Sleeping Bear Dunes! I haven’t even seen all the Great Lakes!
I think it’s very natural to take those local things for granted. we assume that we have all the time in the world and we’ll get there eventually. I know I did. The even crazier part is that once I returned to Michigan, I wasn’t in any hurry to get to Sleeping Bear Dunes or Mackinac Island.
If I was saying goodbye to Metro Detroit – or “The D” as the young’uns call it – one restaurant I would want to go to before leaving would be Olga’s Kitchen. The best way to describe Olga’s would be “Greek-American”. I wouldn’t even go as far as to say that to say it’s “an Americanized version of Greek food”. Instead, it’s a mashup of the two. The thing Olga’s is best know for is its take on gyros, which they call…Olgas.
For the most part, Olga’s Kitchen is Michigan area chain. They do have a couple restaurants in Ohio and one in Illinois. Ultimately, however, it is a “local thing”.
Comerica Park
I’m sure I’ve written about this – ad nauseam for some of you – but my favorite place in the Metro Detroit area is Comerica Park – home of the Detroit Tigers.
It’s not hyperbole for me to say that Comerica Park may very well be my favorite place in Earth. When I moved to South Carolina, the “home” team there was the Atlanta Braves. I attended a couple games at Turner Field, but the 5 hour commute make frequent visits unrealistic.
Whats more, I could not bring myself to root for the Braves. I had cable TV, and all the Braves games were televised; but I could not bring myself to being too invested in the teams. Also, it probably doesn’t help that I also subscribed to the MLB TV service, so I streamed all the stingers games over my computer.
