Unlearn what you have learned

As WordPress continues to recycle old prompts, I pulled another prompt from The Coffee Monsterz Co to respond to today

What is something you had to unlearn?

One thing I had to unlearn was wearing my insecurity on my sleeve.

I’ve always been a pretty insecure guy. When I was in high school, I would usually walk through the halls, looking at my feet, especially if I was lucky enough to be talking to a girl. But over the years, I’ve learned to take the “faked until you make it” a philosophy and make it my own.

Yes, it’s true, you need to have a few victories in order to build some confidence. But at the same time, you have to not be afraid of failure.

Back in my barhopping days, I was the guy in my circle of friends who would approach girls. Sure, I got shot down a lot. Probably a lot more often than I actually succeeded. But it’s like the Michael Jordan quote says:

I’ve missed more than 9,000 shots in my career. I’ve lost almost 300 games. Twenty-six times, I’ve been trusted to take the game-winning shot and missed. I’ve failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.

As a Detroit Pistons fan, I absolutely despise Michael Jordan. However, I’ve actually had this quote posted in my classroom for the last several years. This quote is true. I believe it. A while back, I wrote about how failure is our teacher. I believed it then, and I believe it now more than ever .So again, to answer the prompt, one thing I needed to unlearn was the fear of failure.

I grew up hating Detroit’s Bad Boys. If you’re not from Michigan, how could you not? My buddy in college was from Michigan and loved them. Recently I learned Bill Lambier went to high school out here in LA. I don’t know why that surprised me, but it did. Turns out, he was the son of a corporate executive – another surprise. The last surprise was I learned he led his high school to a state title in a huge upset over a perennial powerhouse. This last surprise made me give him a little more respect than I want to admit to. That school they beat ain’t no joke…

I totally get it. Most of the country hated the Bad Boys.

I’ve always said that if Bill Laimbeer had gotten traded to the Celtics, he would’ve been a god in Boston

        Interesting observation, but true
