As WordPress continues to recycle old prompts, I pulled another prompt from The Coffee Monsterz Co to respond to today
What is something you had to unlearn?
One thing I had to unlearn was wearing my insecurity on my sleeve.
I’ve always been a pretty insecure guy. When I was in high school, I would usually walk through the halls, looking at my feet, especially if I was lucky enough to be talking to a girl. But over the years, I’ve learned to take the “faked until you make it” a philosophy and make it my own.
Yes, it’s true, you need to have a few victories in order to build some confidence. But at the same time, you have to not be afraid of failure.
Back in my barhopping days, I was the guy in my circle of friends who would approach girls. Sure, I got shot down a lot. Probably a lot more often than I actually succeeded. But it’s like the Michael Jordan quote says:
I’ve missed more than 9,000 shots in my career. I’ve lost almost 300 games. Twenty-six times, I’ve been trusted to take the game-winning shot and missed. I’ve failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.
As a Detroit Pistons fan, I absolutely despise Michael Jordan. However, I’ve actually had this quote posted in my classroom for the last several years. This quote is true. I believe it. A while back, I wrote about how failure is our teacher. I believed it then, and I believe it now more than ever .So again, to answer the prompt, one thing I needed to unlearn was the fear of failure.
