As WordPress continues to recycle old prompts, I pulled another prompt from The Coffee Monsterz Co to respond to today

How are you different when you are going through a rough vs. good season in life?

I like to think that I’m a generally upbeat person. don’t get me wrong, I have my down turns. And more than not, I’m just “level-headed”; neither happy nor sad.

In good times…

When things are going good for me, I think I’m more cognizant of people around me who are struggling. I’ll try to be encouraging to them, with out coming across as patronizing. I’ll even try to be sympathetic, saying something “oh man that’s the worst”. And then I’ll share a quick anecdote to let them know that I can sympathize. I’ll know that someone is really taking it to brat if that asking something like “how did you get through it?” That’s all when I can tell that they’re really struggling.

…and in bad times

I think I react like most people do when things get bad. When you’re in a rut, it seems like there’s no way out of it; and the option of “powering through” feels hopeless. It’s at these moments that you have render that things will get better. Life is so cyclical. As cliched as it sounds, we really do have leaks in valleys in our lives.

When I am going through a rough patch, it’s important for me to start looking for the small victories: a quick drive to work; a good cup of coffee; the Tigers winning a baseball game.

Speaking of baseball

One of the many reason I love baseball so much is that it’s a great metaphor for life on so many levels. Baseball, like life is about peaks and valleys; ebbs and flows. Over a 162 game schedule you’re going to have good run and bad runs – just as you do during a 365 day year. And in baseball just like life, the good times don’t last forever but neither do the bad times.
