What’s the longest trip you’ve ever taken?

The longest trip I’ve ever taken both in time duration and distance was the trip for me to France during the summer after my sophomore year in high school.

I’ve written about it a few times before here on the blog, and as somebody who doesn’t travel very much, I have to say that that trip to France remains on a short list of the greatest things I’ve ever done in my life. Not only was it the longest and furthest trip I ever took, but going to France was an opportunity to really come out of my shell with some of my classmates. In fact, I basically divide my high school experience into two distinct eras: the two years before going to France, and the two years after.

Before the trip, I spent most of my time staring at my feet when I walked the halls between classes. After France? I actually started making eye contact with people. I started talking to girls. I went out for my school swim team. I got to the point where I really didn’t give a crap what people I didn’t even know thought of me.

Despite that massive shift in my teenage years, I never really made travel a priority growing up, and that default setting just carried over straight into adulthood. Living in South Carolina for eight years gave me a geographic change of pace, but when it came to true traveling, I stayed pretty well rooted.

Lately, though, that might finally be changing. Sierra travels a lot, and we’ve been floating the idea of heading out to Las Vegas this winter—likely over her February birthday weekend. I have zero interest in gambling, but visiting my aunt who has lived out there for years without me ever going feels long overdue. It will be good to see her, grab dinner, and finally catch a glimpse of that part of her life. Plus, catching a show at the Sphere wouldn’t hurt.

I like the idea of traveling, even if I don’t do it enough. Maybe being with somebody who is willing to give me a swift kick in the butt is exactly what I need to finally break that old tendency to stay put.

Thanks! I’m pretty sure that her and I would find a way to have a good time at an insurance seminar, let alone Vegas!

It’s always good to experience the Las Vegas glitz once. There’s other things to do in Vegas besides gambling. Shows, concerts, hiking (I hear red rock is cool) and restaurants. Checking out different hotels is always something to do. They also have shopping outlets. The youngsters go for bars and clubbing. Not really my scene anymore. You might like the sportsbook, not for betting, but to watch a bunch of different games all at the same time.
