This is another recycled prompt, albeit a good one. To be clear, I would not want to live in a world without music. I think the world would be a much quieter, far more lonely place without music.
Music is unusual because it is both a solitary and a communal experience. We connect with music on a deeply personal level. At the same time, we share sense of community with others who enjoy the same genres or musicians that we do. Howl else could you explain Swifties, metal heads, or even jazz hipsters?
Have you ever seen one of these “listens to _____ for the first time” videos? I question the validity of anything on the internet – because it’s so easy to act this stuff out – but could you imagine experiencing something again for the first time, especially something as powerful as a song? Experiencing a groove? Connecting with someone lyrics? What about that initial emotional response? Feeling powerful; feeling sad; finding that common connection with others?
Without music, I would feel just a bit more disconnected from the rest of humanity. I wouldn’t want to live in a world without music.
