As WordPress continues to recycle old prompts, I pulled another prompt from The Coffee Monsterz Co to respond to today
What are some signs that you are happy and well?
I’m smiling – a great example of this is when I found out that Kid 1 got a near-full academic scholarship to the university of Wisconsin. I couldn’t wipe the smile off my face for about three days.
There’s more spring in my step. I be one of those people that feels a little bit more energetic when I’m in a really good mood. So there’s usually a little bit more “pep in my step“
I’m much more patient with my students. My students get on my nerves. They are, admittedly, a tougher crowd. Some days it makes the job really difficult. But if I’m in a good enough mood, nothing they do could bring me down
This is kind of a weird prompt, so I was struggling with coming up with an answer. I think happiness is something that you just feel. It’s truly hard to describe.
This reminds me of a bit from an episode of Star Trek. The Next Generation called “Descent“. in the episode, the android data experiences emotions for the first time. (Ultimately it turns out that he was being manipulated by his evil, twin Lore, but that’s another story for another day) Data‘s best friend and engineer, Geordi LaForge, suggests the possibility that maybe data wasn’t necessarily experiencing emotions. In turn, Data asks Geordi to describe his personal experiences with emotions.
La Forge: Yeah, okay. Well, when I feel angry, first I uh, first I feel... hostile.
Data: Could you describe feeling hostile?
Lt. Commander Geordi La Forge: Well yeah, it's like feeling... beligerent, combative.
Data: Could you describe feeling angry without referring to other feelings?
La Forge: No, I... I guess I can't. I just... feel angry.
Data: That was my experience as well. I simply... felt angry.
That, and the fact of the matter is lately. I’ve been feeling uninspired with writing. For the last week or so, I feel like I’ve been responding to prompts just for the sake of having something to post. Aside from this past week’s news about Pete Rose, I haven’t really had enough other things to write about lately.
