Rob Reacts to Jimmy Kimmel’s reinstatement

Wow, that was quick!

Yesterday, sometime around 4 PM Eastern time, ABC announced that Jimmy Kimmel Live! was retiring to the air and they are bringing back the titular host. There was some long winded press announcement about it that contained a bunch of carefully chosen words.

But what the Mouse House won’t tell you officially is that they decided to reinstate Kimmel because they had a lost somewhere between three to $4 billion in Disney+ streaming service cancellations, devalue of their stocks and cancellation of Disney timeshare Disney lifetime membership and that sort.

I’m not really sure how to feel about all this. I’m torn. I’m glad that Jimmy Kimmel is back on the air. But to be honest, his show never should’ve been pulled in the first place. And if I’m being completely honest, I for one I’ve never been a fan of the whole “late night talk show“ format to begin with. Once in a while, it’s cool to see an actor appear on an episode to come on, maybe show a clip from their new movie. But usually Celebrity appearances on these shows about you small talk about really dumb things that I could care less about, like what happened to them driving the other day.

Even the musical guests that are often on shows like Jimmy Kimmel and Jimmy Fallon or even Stephen Colbert, I like some of the artist who perform on these shows like Saturday Night Live. However, it’s not appointment viewing for me. If I miss the show, it’s not the end of the world. If I hear some good word of mouth about how good a life performance was, I can usually catch it somewhere on the Internet.

I’m curious to see what, if anything, will happen to ABC/Disney in the days and weeks ahead. Are they going to get some kind of backlash from the FCC? I seriously doubt that they can legally get away with rescinding ABCs broadcasting license. And if they tried it, I think people would be outraged. I think more to the point, and the main reason Disney pulled the trigger and suspended kettle on the first place is that they’re trying to purchase roughly 10% of the NFL as part of their new TV deal.

Much like you, I’ve never really been into late-night shows. I think they were more of a cultural staple back when people only had three to five channels to choose from, so late-night programming felt like must-see TV. But for my generation (late 30s to mid/late 40s), I don’t think many of us tune in regularly. Personally, I’ll catch a clip or two on YouTube, but by the time 10 p.m. hits, I’m already out.

What’s most important—and impossible to ignore—is the deliberate effort to suppress speech. This administration isn’t even trying to hide it; they’re openly willing to use whatever tactics they can to silence those who oppose their message. We have to remember that free speech is one of the most vital rights we hold as Americans. Even when a message doesn’t align with our personal values, no matter which side we’re on, suppressing that right cannot and must not be tolerated. If we allow the country to continue down this path—and it’s hard to argue that we’re not already heading there—we risk becoming no different from North Korea, Russia, Myanmar, and other totalitarian regimes.

      You nailed it.

And with free speech it goes to that argument of “I disagree with everything you have to say but I will defend your right to say it”.

The problem now is that most Americans aren’t very media-savvy. If “the internet tells me…” many people cannot separate fact from fiction. Finally, too much of what people hear isn’t about information as much as it is about affirmation.
