As WordPress continues to recycle old prompts, I pulled another prompt from The Coffee Monsterz Co to respond to today
How would you respond to someone asking what the point of your hobby is?
You mean you travel to watch that boring game?
I tell them that my hobby is what makes me happy. Since no one is getting hurt by it and it’s not against the law, it’s not really anybody’s business.
But seriously, I know the baseball is not the most popular sport in the world. It’s not even the most popular sport in America anymore, and hasn’t been for a long time. But it’s my favorite sport. So my favorite hobby is going to baseball games, and visiting different major league and minor league cities.
Having said that, it looks like most major league teams have their home schedules mapped out for 2026, with start times and everything. At this point, I can probably start planning the road trip that I’ve wanted to do for the last few seasons: Philadelphia, Washington DC and Baltimore.
But the way things have gone these last couple years, I’ve ended up going to one or two different stadiums that, quite frankly, I didn’t expect to go to. It just goes to show you really have no idea what the future holds
You DO know it’s fake, right?
Another hobby of mine that some people be laughing at is professional wrestling. While admittedly, I haven’t watched it nearly as much over the last few months as I have for the better part of my life, I still consider myself a fan of professional wrestling.
Pro wrestling is a really weird business. Historically, it has tried to pass itself off as a sport while it is most certainly scripted entertainment. The trouble with saying that “wrestling is fake“ is that people assume that the wrestlers are wrestling on trampolines and all the weapons are gimmick. This is not the case typically. 95% of the time that you see a pro wrestler start bleeding, it’s because they’re actually bleeding.
What I like to tell people that pro wrestlers are basically live theater performers. They are their own stuntman, and they have only one take to get everything right.
I know a lot of people would make the argument that pro boxing, maybe even the NFL or the NBA are also “fixed“. That remains to be seen. But I was laughing when people think that they’re making some relevant statement to me when they say things like “you do know that this is fake, right?“ as if they’re telling me the truth about Santa Claus.
Why?
Why are we so judgmental of what other people like to do for fun? As I said earlier, if it’s not hurting anybody, who really cares? I have to admit, though that I am a little bit hypocritical in this regard myself. I laugh at grown women who consider themselves “Swiftie”. I also think that the people who watch Hallmark movies have horrible taste in entertainment. But the truth is, they’re not hurting anybody either. So why should I really care if other people like Taylor Swift or Hallmark movies or not? I really do need to practice what I preach.
