Starting a Revolution

What’s a song lyric that has stuck with you forever?

Well, I can’t say that this is a song that has stuck with me “forever” as I only heard it for the first time in the mid-90s, but one particular line that stays with me is from the Oasis song “Don’t Look Back in Anger”:

-Oasis, “Don’t Look Back in Anger”

I’m gonna start a revolution from my bed

I know the line is an obvious reference to John Lennon and Yoko Ono’s bed-in protest, but there’s an inherent irony to it. A bed is a place of rest, making the idea of launching a radical or violent action from it quietly paradoxical.

When you think about the early stages of rebuilding a life, so much of the heavy lifting happens where and when no one is looking. Going to the gym, reading every day, putting your nose to the grindstone, building new habits, and expanding your mind—that kind of work is entirely internal. It’s the quiet foundation laid in private before any outward change ever becomes visible.

And on a more personal level, looking at where I’m at right now, that line hits a little differently. When you share that kind of private space with someone who inspires you to step up your game, it feels less like a casual fling and more like the foundation of a solid, real partnership. It’s about building something quiet and real out of sight, proving that sometimes the most significant revolutions don’t start with a megaphone—they start right where you least expect them.

This week, I’m stepping back into the world of leadership. It’s not about craving power or seizing a vacuum; it’s about realizing you have the experience—forged in the trenches of the classroom—to do the job better than the chaos you see around you.

We’re breaking down the burden of accountability, learning what not to do from past mistakes, and cultivating that critical, hard-won philosophy: the strength to be gentle, and the backbone to hold the line.

I’m chronicling my own journey from worker bee to… well, king bee, I suppose. Tune in this Wednesday for the latest episode of Rebuilding Rob: The Podcast. It’s a conversation on what it means to set the structure and be the anchor for everyone else
