Last week‘s episode of Daredevil: Born Again ended with a full scale riot as the citizens of New York were finally turning against Mayor Fisk. The show concluded with Karen Page getting caught by the AVTF. Buckle up for the penultimate episode of Daredevil: Born Again, season 2!
I just remembered that two weeks from now we’re going to get the premiere of The Punisher: One Last Kill, which I can only assume is going to pick up on the heels of …Born Again, season two.
⚠️ SPOILER ALERT
Fair warning: The following review contains a beat-by-beat breakdown of “The Hateful Darkness” If you haven’t watched yet, proceed at your own risk. Spoilers abound!
The Breakdown
• The Aftermath: The episode opens with David Bowie’s “It Ain’t Easy” over the grim reality of the riot’s wake. We see Karen being booked, followed by a chilling “dressing down” from Wilson Fisk. Karen remains defiant, telling Fisk she’s never seen him scared before—and she likes it.
• The Jones Factor: Krysten Ritter’s name is back in the credits, and Jessica Jones is definitely sticking around. She visits Mr. Charles, threatening him if he ever goes near Danielle again. Charles claims he’s the only link to Luke Cage (currently overseas), and warns that the Governor wants Fisk out—prompting Fisk to move against the Governor first.
• The Legal Trap: Cherry is back, informing Matt that Karen is at the 15th Precinct and being fast-tracked for “Vigilante Court.” Matt is torn between a legal rescue or a physical breakout. Meanwhile, Jessica decides her part is done after getting Charles off her back, leaving Matt with a final thought: someone has to put Fisk down.
• A Dark Request: Matt appeals to Bullseye, suggesting that killing Fisk could be the “one good deed” that balances his scales. It’s a heavy moment that suggests Matt is willing to cross his own moral lines.
• In the Hot Seat: Karen meets Detective Brett Mahoney at the 15th. He’s looking out for her, but Karen insists on facing Fisk in open court. Matt eventually arrives—not as a vigilante, but as Matt Murdock, attorney-at-law. The look on Fisk’s face when he sees Murdock is pure fury. Remember: Fisk that Matt is actually Daeedevil. But Matt has also become something of a local celebrity, as he took a bullet for Fisk.
• The Psychological War: While Matt’s partner makes a compelling legal argument, Dr. Glenn evaluates Karen using the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory. The session turns ugly when Glenn brings up Karen’s brother and Frank Castle. The tension peaks when Glenn slaps Karen after realizing Karen actually pities her.
• Escalation: In a brutal montage, we see Daniel being thrashed by Buck. Despite the pain, Daniel refuses to give up BB’s location, remaining defiant until the very end when Buck finally kills him.
• The Sanctuary: Matt retreats to the church to pray to Saint Jude—the patron saint of lost causes. It’s a cliché for a reason; it fits his mental state perfectly. The episode closes with a beautifully edited sequence cutting between Bullseye’s physical violence, Matt’s mental anguish, and Fisk’s growing fury.
Final Thoughts
What a great story. It’s still building to a massive head. Just when you feel like they can’t turn the tension up anymore, they do. This is so well-paced—leaps and bounds ahead of the Star Wars miniseries or other MCU entries. Daredevil: Born Again is easily the best television the MCU has ever produced.
Daredevil: Born Again is currently streaming on Disney+
