I get it. Episode one was called “The Northern Star.” Now we’ve reached the other end of the compass.
This is it—the season finale. After the cliffhangers in episode seven, I wondered if they could tie up these loose ends in a single hour. With the premiere of The Punisher: One Last Kill next week and the fallout likely bleeding into Spider-Man: Brand New Day, the stakes for the MCU’s street level have never been higher.
If you’ve read my reviews before, you know the deal: beat-for-beat notes. Spoilers abound!
The Beats
• Flashback/Patchwork: We open with Karen Page having a courtroom flashback while, in the present, Jessica Jones is patching up a battered Matt Murdock.
• The Ultimatum: Buck Cashman (The Bullet) arrives to give Fisk the news that Daniel Blake (Michael Gandolfini) was killed, refusing to give up BB . Buck asks Fisk, “Are you sure you want to do this?”
• The Witness: Matt arrives in court and calls Wilson Fisk himself as a witness. As Fisk takes the stand, a swarm of Anti-Vigilante Task Force (AVTF) goons enters to intimidate the room.
• Sniper on the Roof: Bullseye starts clearing the AVTF goons on the stairs. He reaches the sniper meant for Karen, kills him, and scoffs, “Poser.”
• The Kitchen Sink: On the stand, Fisk gives a grand speech, but Matt zings him with one-liners. The judges call Matt’s approach “kitchen sink” lawyering, but it works—he gets the Freeport and Northern Star evidence aired.
• The Reveal: Matt realizes the only way to expose what happened that night is to testify as a primary witness. He does it. “I am Daredevil.” Charlie Cox’s acting here is top-tier; you can hear the vocal cord tension as he exposes Fisk’s agenda.
• The Reinforcements: Jessica Jones and Governor Kirsten McDuffie arrive in court. Shades of A Few Good Men—Fisk is forced to answer.
• The Stand-Off: The Governor informs Fisk that the state is taking over the Freeport. Outside, Bullseye shoots Buck (but doesn’t kill him). Fisk, refusing to back down, goes on the air to call for a civilian war.
• The People’s Mask: Bernadette “BB” Bernthal reveals herself in her latest video, removing a Kingpin mask. Suddenly, the city responds. Civilians flood the streets wearing red masks and filming the AVTF.
• The Turning Tide: Detective Cole North arrives. The Ayala family (White Tiger) appears to clear Hector’s name. The AVTF begins to fracture and turn on itself.
• The Deal: Under pressure from the Attorney General, Sheila Rivera pleads with Wilson to take the deal: renounce his citizenship and leave the country.
• The Monster Unleashed: Fisk snaps. He opens his doors and starts attacking the crowd like a slasher-movie villain. His white suit is literally stained with the blood of the people.
• The Final Stand: Matt, Jessica, and Karen face Fisk. Matt offers grace, telling Fisk, “It’s over. For both of us.” Fisk finally agrees to step down.
The Aftermath:
• Matt and Karen share a quiet moment reflecting on their “normal” life—or lack thereof.
• The NYPD arrests Matt. As he’s taken away, Luke Cage makes his long-awaited appearance!
• BB takes Karen’s old job at the Bulletin.
• Benjamin Poindexter (Bullseye) is seen on a plane with Mr. Charles (Matthew Lillard).
• Fisk ends up on a beach—isolated, “cold,” and alone.
Rob’s Reflections
That reveal absolutely had “I am Iron Man” vibes to it. It’s a total game-changer for Season 3. Like Peter Parker in the Civil War comics, Matt just broke the status quo in a way you can’t undo. How do you put that genie back in the bottle? You don’t. Everyone knows he’s a vigilante now, and that’s going to make his life—and his legal career—nearly impossible moving forward.
I was holding out hope for a Frank Castle cameo to set up next week, but since he was kept out of the scenery here, it makes me even more curious about how One Last Kill will bring him back to New York.
Overall, it’s a heavy ending. This show always finds a way to get Matt out of the picture by the finale, whether he’s “dead” or headed to a cell. We know he’ll be back for Season 3, but the world he’s coming back to is going to look a lot different.
