A split-composition conceptual illustration contrasting "The Incontrovertible Truth" with "Blissful Ignorance." On the left, massive concrete blocks labeled "Reality," "The Facts," and "Uncomfortable Knowledge" crash through a shattered barrier toward a shocked man. On the right, a woman sits safely inside a glowing, protective bubble, wearing a blindfold and headphones to shut out the outside world.

Special thanks once again to rojie for today’s prompt. if you haven’t done so already, definitely check out her blog justrojie.com. Incidentally, this wasn’t the prompt designated for today. This was an earlier prompt that i just really liked.

Do you think that ignorance is bliss?

I don’t personally think that ignorance is bliss. I would much rather have the facts about a particular situation than be kept ignorant and in the dark.

The truth is a tricky thing. Sometimes it’s brutal. Sometimes it hurts, but there is something undeniable about it—something incontrovertible. You have the facts of the matter. However good or bad they might be, you are informed.

Having said that, there are people who absolutely insist on remaining blissfully ignorant. They firmly throw opinions about a matter, and once they’ve made up their mind, they’re locked in. The facts—the actual truth about a situation—won’t change their minds, which is why they typically try to shy away from it so it doesn’t have a chance to alter their perception of things.

People will do almost anything not to have to think, or to avoid questioning themselves and their perceptions of reality. Look at how many people simply reject the facts of a matter just because they come into direct conflict with their preconceived notions.

The real danger of living in that state of denial is that reality eventually catches up. For many people, the long-term effect of the proverbial bubble is that the truth eventually forces its way in, and when it does, their perceived reality comes crashing down on their heads.

Whether you look at large-scale cultural denial or political narratives where people double down long after the facts are clear, the pattern is the same. But the toll of that willful ignorance is steep: eventually, you have to process the truth of the matter. And for a lot of people, by the time they finally come to terms with reality, it’s almost too late.
