No Resolution is Your Resolution

A medium close-up photograph capturing Virtual Rob, a middle-aged man with a grey-brown beard and olive jacket, seated inside a vintage yellow school bus at sunset. He holds a travel tumbler and looks forward. The image is tightly cropped (16:9), focusing closely on Rob and a heavily shadowed, faceless female silhouette leaning forward in the seat directly behind and to his right, creating a distinct physical proximity and an intimate, tense atmosphere. Outside the bus windows, a warm golden and purple sunset glows over a blurred brick elementary school and another yellow bus nose.

I haven’t had a dream I could actually remember in what feels like a long time. But last night, my brain decided to wake up, dust off the old projector, and play a scene so vivid that when I woke up mid-sentence, I almost tried to close my eyes and force myself back under just to pick up the thread.

The setting was absurd enough on its own: I was 52 years old, attending summer school at my old elementary school. Not as a kid, mind you—as my actual, current-day self.

In the dream, someone had anonymously arranged a few minutes for me to talk to my ex, Veronica, alone on an idle school bus. When I stepped onto the bus, there was no dramatic scene. No shouting, no rehashing of the old wreckage, and no deep interrogation into why things fell apart or why we both just walked away months ago without a word.

In fact, the stranger part is that I don’t even think I saw her face. I didn’t hear her voice, and she didn’t say a single word back to me. But in that strange way dreams work, I just knew it was her.

Instead of looking for answers, I just looked in her direction and said my piece. I told her where I was in life. I told her that I was seeing someone, that I was happy, that it was serious, and that there was love there.

And her reaction? Zero. Absolute silence from a faceless presence.

Whether that was because I was waking up right at that moment or because there was simply nothing left to be said, it didn’t even matter. Because as I sat with my morning coffee, reflecting on why that strange encounter felt so heavy yet strangely liberating, a sentence hit me:

Sometimes, no resolution is your resolution.

For months, the weirdness of our ending had been floating around in the back of my mind. We went from living seven minutes apart to absolute radio silence—no final talk, no official breakup declaration, just a clean, mutual drift into nothingness. Because that kind of ghost-ending is so completely out of character for how I normally handle things, it left an open loop in my head.

I spent time wondering what she was thinking, but what last night proved to me is that I wasn’t actually waiting for her answers. The fact that she had no face and no voice in the dream proved it wasn’t about her at all. I didn’t need an apology, an explanation, or her perspective. I just needed to hear myself state my reality out loud in that space. I needed to act in alignment with my own standards, speak my truth, and walk off the bus.

My subconscious essentially staged a redo on its own terms. It gave me the floor, let me clear my chest, and showed me that her silence no longer carries any weight.

I woke up feeling lighter today. The story didn’t get a Hollywood ending, but it got something better: a final period on a sentence I thought was going to be an ellipsis forever.
