The Lie of “Out of Sight, Out of Mind”

The Illusion of Easy Healing

Proverbs are stubborn things. They persist because they’re easy—they act as a soft pillow, a Band-Aid we use to tell ourselves that relief comes magically and quickly. We want to believe that if we just stop looking, the pain will evaporate.

I spent some time looking into the technical differences between proverbs, adages, and clichés—the distinction between a “nugget of wisdom,” an “established truth,” and an “exhausted phrase.” But regardless of the label, “Out of sight, out of mind” fails the test of lived experience.

Why Memory Refuses to Fade

It is an insult to the human cognitive process. We aren’t file cabinets that can be emptied; we are landscapes where every experience leaves a mark. I don’t have to look far for proof. It has been six days since I last spoke to Veronica. By the logic of this proverb, she should be fading. She isn’t.

I am the guy who writes everything down. I’ve been journaling since the sixth grade, initially to hold onto details, but now, I do it to “posteritize” my own mindset. I write to process the why behind my actions. My brain refuses to let go, not because I’m dwelling, but because I refuse the “quick escape.”

Choosing Calluses Over Forgetting

Most people seem to want the quick release—they want to forget, to eulogize, and move on. I don’t. I’d rather build calluses.

Writing creates those calluses. It allows me to hold onto the memory without letting the sharp edges draw blood. I don’t want to forget the pain of the last few days because that pain is part of the data. If you want a proverb that actually holds up to scrutiny, look at “Time heals all wounds.” That one is true. It’s not about forgetting; it’s about the slow, steady process of turning a wound into a callus so you can keep moving forward.

Rebuilding a life takes grit, consistency, and a lot of ‘Option C’ thinking. Whether I’m closing in on 1,000 consecutive days of blogging or reflecting on the decade of work that brought me here, the mission remains the same: No glitz. Just the work. New to the blog?
