Revisiting Relationship Fatigue, the Math of Heartbreak, and Finding Your Person
Thanks to Jetpack’s “On This Day” feature, I stumbled across a post I made exactly three years ago today titled “The Risk-Reward Imbalance.” At that point in 2023, I was completely fried on relationships. I liked the idea of meeting someone, but given my track record, I felt like the risks far outweighed the rewards. I was tired of going through the motions, getting invested in somebody, only to have it end.
I also knew I had to spend more time on myself—building myself up, exploring things I liked to do for fun, and having an even deeper commitment to my relationship with Kid 1 and Kid 2
It’s amazing what a difference three years makes. Not so much the time itself, but finding your person.
When I started dating Sierra, I already thought she was a really amazing person, but I had no idea what the next few months would hold for us. I was once again pretty cautious, but I also knew she was very much “the one who got away” from several years prior. My mindset back then was a lot like that scared bank robber sitting on the pavement in Dirty Harry: staring down the barrel of potential heartbreak, but thinking, “I gots to know.” Even if nothing else ever came of it, I wanted to take the chance just to see how it went—to see how I felt, and how she might feel about me.
I look back on that article from three years ago and I see somebody who was guarded and protective. He built a wall around himself; he thought he was being wise, but the truth is, he was just scared.
How well things have gone between Sierra and me is a testament not only to what an incredible person she is, but also to what happens when you’re willing to take a chance again; what can happen when you’re willing to let your guard down just a bit and give someone a peek inside the armor.
Rebuilding a life takes grit, consistency, and a lot of ‘Option C’ thinking. Having crossed the 1,000-day milestone, I’m now charting the territory beyond. The mission remains the same: No glitz. Just the work. New to the blog? Start your journey here to see the blueprint and the ‘Tricorder’ perspective behind the rebuild.
Today’s post is inspired by the WordPress Daily Prompt. While I’ve taken the topic in my own direction for the Road beyond 1,000 Days, you can find more responses to today’s prompt HERE.
